Area children and youth will have more opportunity to be active and have fun with the launch of a new tag rugby program, the Haldimand Wolfpack Rugby League Football Club.
“Our aim is to provide a fun, safe, enjoyable and inclusive environment that encourages participants of all abilities, ages and backgrounds to enjoy, learn, develop and achieve their own personal successes and milestones through the game of rugby league,” said Paul Buchanan, founder of the club.
The not-for-profit sports club was created to promote and grow the sport of rugby league in Haldimand and Six Nations of the Grand River.
“We are planning to run two programs, the Mighty Wolfpups … and Wolfpack Youth,” Buchanan said.
Mighty Wolfpups will be for children ages two to five, and will cover the basics of ball sports. It will be noncontact.
Wolfpack Youth will be for players aged six to 16, broken down to U7, U9, U12, U14 and U16, “which is based on the modified version of rugby league called tag. The focus will be on fun and learning the basics,” Buchanan said.
The program will be run Saturday mornings from mid-July until the end of September at McKinnon Park Secondary School.
“We are also planning to run a Try Rugby Day on June 29 from 10 a.m. to noon so that we can introduce even more kids to other sport ahead of our first week of programming on July 13,” Buchanan said.
